    What is Rohos Logon Key?

Rohos Logon Key is a two-factor authentication (logon) solution. It converts any USB drive into a security token for your computer and allows to access Windows in a secure way by USB token, replacing the Windows login. This kind of program is also called password replacement solution.

    Windows XP welcome screen.

    What is Windows Logon model?

Rohos integrates into any Windows logon configuration using one of the following Logon models. The models each are sets of Rohos settings and tools that are used in order to provide password replacement solution in a particular case. For a list of models see features.

How does Rohos Logon Key work?

Rohos Logon Key replaces regular password based logon by USB flash drive (or other removable USB media). The user connects his hardware key to the computer and he/she is logged into Windows without having to type in his/her username or password.

It's just like carrying a key for your house. Imagine that the USB Key is a key to your house, and the computer is your house. In order to get in you have to use the key, otherwise no one can get in unless they forcefully break in.

    It's better for security:

    1. With USB Key you can use a stronger Windows password
    2. Rohos automatically locks your Windows when you steps away (just un-plug the Key)
    3. The authentication is fully automatic and fast
    4. Your Windows password will not be revealed by a spyware or key loggers software if any

How does the program use my USB flash drive?

Rohos can configure your USB flash drive to store information about your credentials, which contain not the password but only the data about the password. Rohos needs these data (installed on your PC) to identify you as the owner of the particular user account.

In case of loss or theft of the USB Key, a bad guy won't be able to get your password. It is securely stored on the USB Key which is only configured for your PC. The simple duplication of the USB flash drive will not make it as a login key to your PC.

It looks cool... but what will happen if an owner loses the key... is there any way to login to Windows again?

To prevent such situation you can use Emergency Logon function.

I did not receive the registration code.

It may seldom happen. The automatic registration is a complex process of the incorporating activities of the distributor, web communication and proper functioning of our servers. What is done can be characterized as "best effort" and it works in the majority of cases. A frequent cause of the failure is that some users, most commonly Hotmail users, have their spam settings too tight which causes our notification mail to be discarded. What to do in such case:

    • Visit our support page and request the registration code there
    • Send us a reminder and we'll try to react as soon as possible
    • Please, attach the order details such as the reseller, order reference number, product name, e-mail address used in the order

  • How to avoid reinserting USB Key to unlock Windows?

One of the frequently asked questions from our users:

I haven't figured out if there's a way to leave the USB Key plugged in, lock the workstation, then only to use the USB key PIN code to unlock the workstation.
Can you please let me know whether it is possible? Or, shall I always have to remove, then reinsert the USB flash drive in order to only enter the PIN code?

Yes, assuming that physical access to the workstation is secure, and you would like to be able to unlock the workstation by typing in the simplier USB PIN code rather than the strong Windows pass phrase.

    Here's how to do it:
    1. Lock your Windows by Win+L (or Ctrl+Alt+Del -> 'Lock Workstation' button - if you have Win2k).
    2. Then to unlock click on the "Desktop is Locked" string. Rohos will search through the inserted USB sticks and unlocks Windows by USB key (and PIN code if it is).
Note: To use this trick you should first log in via USB Key

This works very simply and efficiently. No need to reinsert your USB Key every time.

Does Rohos Logon Key work in Windows Vista x64?

The program Rohos Logon Key works in Windows 2003/XP/Vista/2008 x64 without any limitations. But on the 64-bit platform only two logon models are supported:

    • Windows XP/Vista + Rohos on all the types of processors (AMD64, IA64)
    • Rohos Credential Provider only on AMD64

Note: Now the program Rohos Disk works in Windows Vista x64 OS.
